Best Tourist Places to Visit in Ernakulam District

Ernakulam refers to the eastern, mainland portion of the city of Kochi in central Kerala, India. The city is the most urban part of Kochi and has lent its name to the Ernakulam district.

Today Kochi is one of the principal tourist destinations of Kerala. There are more than 50 tourist destinations in and around the city of Kochi. Tourism destination categories of Kochi are backwater, Beaches, Hills, Monuments, Museums, Waterfalls and Wild life.

01. Fort Kochi

Kochi, also known as Cochin, is a major port city on the south-west coast of India by the Arabian Sea and is part of the district of Ernakulam in the state of Kerala. It is often called Ernakulam, which refers to the mainland part of the city.

02. Cherai Beach

Cherai Beach is the golden beach of Kerala and is rightly called “The Princess of the Arabian sea”. The beach is shallow, calm and is ideal for swimming & sunbathing. Cherai Beach is just 25 km from Kochi, and 30 km from Cochin International Airport. The nearest towns are North Paravur (6 km) and Kodungallur (10 km).

03. Munambam Beach

Munambam is a place near Kochi, India at the north end of Vypeen Island, surrounded by the Arabian Sea on the west, Periyar river on the east, and a mouth of the sea on the north. Munambam beach is well known as ‘Muziris golden Beach.

04. Marine Drive

Marine Drive is a picturesque promenade in Kochi, Kerala, India. It is built facing the backwaters. Ironic to its name, no vehicles are allowed on the walkway. Marine Drive is also an economically thriving part of the city of Kochi. With several shopping malls it is as an important centre of shopping activity in Kochi.

05. Ayyappanmudi

Ayyappanmudi, the serene temple at the hill top is situated near Kothamangalam in Ernakulam District of Kerala. The royal route of Kochi – Dhanushkodi passes through this place.

 06. Bhoothathankettu

Bhoothathankettu, a scenic dam site with boating facilities is situated in a vast virgin forest and tourist spot in Ernakulam, Kerala. It is situated outside the village of Pindimana, about 10 km away from the town of Kothamangalam and 50 km away from the main city of Kochi.

07. Thattekkadu Bird Sanctuary

Thattekkad Bird sanctuary popularly known as Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, is located about 12 km from Kothamangalam Taluk of Ernakulam district on the northern banks of the Periyar river.

At the height of 35-523m above the sea level, this marvelous bird sanctuary is situated at Njayapilli peak. 13 km north east of Kothamangalam. Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is a home to some of the rarest species of birds in India.

08. Inchathotty

Inchathotty is a village on the banks of the Periyar River adjoining the bird sanctuary. Inchottotty is very close to Thattekkad forest.

09. Vadattupara

Vadattupara is one of the better ecofriendly weekend tourism destinations in Kerala. It is a small Village / hamlet in Kothamangalam Taluk in Ernakulam District of Kerala State. It comes under Kuttampuzha Panchayath. It belongs to Central Kerala Division.

10. Paniyeli Poru

Paniyeli Poru, near Vengoor, Perumbavoor, has natural water falls, small rivulets, offshore surrounded by rich flora and fauna, where the visitors can sit, relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. There are no restrictions, but the visitors must be cautious.
