The southern bird wing, scientifically known as Troides minos, is a large and striking swallowtail butterfly endemic to south India. The butterfly has red and yellow on its wings.

Southern birdwing is locally very common in the southern and central Western Ghats covering the states of Karnataka and Kerala. It is the largest butterfly of India, with a wingspan of 140–190 mm.

The Queen Alexandra’s birdwing (Ornithoptera Alexandrae) is the largest butterfly in the world, with females reaching wingspans slightly in excess of 25 cm (9.8 inches)
Garuda Salabham
Southern bird wing is known as ‘Garuda Salabham’ in Malayalam language. This butterfly is seen up to a height of 3,000 ft. in the Western Ghats. It can also be found in evergreen forests, deciduous forests, dry bush forest and agricultural land.
